3 flavor

neutrinos are fundamental particles, most commonly generated by nuclear fusion reactions in the Sun and other stars.
neutrinos were long thought to be “ghosts”, since they are nearly massless and the force of gravity they exert is extremely small and practically undetectable. Because they only interact with other particles very, very weakly, they can pass through ordinary matter freely as if they were transparent.  Many trillions of them pass through us every second without our knowing.
neutrinos oscillate and when they do they can change their properties between 3 “flavors” (types).  Physicists use the ice cream analogy to help explain what happens to them when they travel through the universe, oscillating as they go – somehow they CHANGE flavors.

Fermi Lab says…”Imagine purchasing a carton of chocolate ice cream at the store, driving home, and opening it only to find it was vanilla! So you put a scoop of vanilla in your bowl and walk into the other room to eat it, where you are surprised to find it is now strawberry. That’s what happens with neutrinos.”
